It’s important when you’re writing to be inspired, even if you’re just throwing together a simple blog post or a quick tweet. With that in mind, I’ve pulled together my five favourite quotes about writing to encourage and inspire you too.
“One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.”
― Jack Kerouac
Simple writing can be the hardest kind. When you’re excited about something you want to say as much as you can. But editing yourself is an important skill to learn, and it takes plenty of practise.
“The scariest moment is always just before you start.”
― Stephen King
They always say the best way to face your fears is head on. So that means you have to start as often as possible, until it’s not so scary any more.
“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft.”
― Anne Lamott
This can not be said enough about first drafts. Don’t worry about crafting the perfect sentences at a first pass. Just shove your thoughts down on paper, and then go back and polish them later. It’s the only way to get anything done.
“I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter.”
― Blaise Pascal
This quote is wonderful because it takes everyone by surprise but then they completely agree with it. It takes time to write well and briefly, but you need to put in the time because you have it, and your audience does not.
“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic.”
― J.K. Rowling
We can work wonders with words. J.K. Rowling is my hero. Nuff said.
